Culture of Nepal

Nepal is blessed with one of the richest cultures in the world. Culture has been called 'the way of life for an entire society'. The statement holds particularly true in case of Nepal where every aspect of life, food, clothing and even occupations are culturally guided. The culture of Nepal includes the codes of manners, dress, language, rituals, norms of behavior and systems of belief.

  Cuisine

Nepalese cuisine is quite simple and has had many influences during its development. As with most things in Nepal, the cuisine varies according to ethnic groups and castes, depending on ingredients available and affordable. Indian, Chinese and Tibetan flavors and aromas can easily be detected in Nepalese meals although Nepal's cuisine maintains its own flare. Nepal's climate has made it possible for the country to grow crops such as rice, lentils, wheat, corn and potatoes.

  Folklore

Nepal is known as a country with a distinctive and strong cultural heritage. It is therefore little wonder that Nepal's folklore plays a large role in society. Nepalese folklore and mythology provides readers and listeners with extensive insight into the lives of the various ethnic groups as well as Nepal as a whole. Such folktales can reveal much about tradition, activities, emotion, superstitions, customs and inhibitions.Tales and stories are typically based upon reality and religious belief, with narration on love, war, gods, demons, ghosts, animals and so on.

  Language

Nepali is classified as an Indo-Aryan Language and is spoken as a mother tongue by approximately half of Nepal's population and as a second language by others. Other names for Nepali include Gorkhali/Gurkhali ("language of the Gurkhas") as well as Parbatiya ("language of the mountains"). Nepali was originally known as Khaskura ("speech of the Khas")an was spoken by rice farming Khas who settled in the Karnali Bheri basin. Today it is spoken throughout Nepal as well as in parts of Bhutan and India.

  Events

A country of color with a strong sense of heritage and tradition, Nepal definitely has no shortage of festivals and celebrations. In fact, the country of Nepal is known for its almost continuous festivals which are always being held in various locations throughout the country. Some would say that the Nepalese people observe more festivals than there are days in the year as it is seldom that the sun sets on the country without some sort of festival taking place.
